It was a beautiful day here in central Mexico, a bit hot but kept under control by periodic cooling breezes from Lake Chapala.
My lawyer called and said my FM3 visa had been successfully renewed for another year, so I hopped on my 125cc Honda and drove over to pick it up. Once that business was completed, time for lunch so went for a fat greasy burger with gouda cheese and fries with a Pepsi on ice, all for 50 pesos (less than $5US, but at the current exchange rate, about $2.50).
An American man and woman were sitting at one of the three outside tables and I’d seen them around before but didn’t know them. I sent a text message and noticed the man was looking at me wanting to say something, I said Hola and he said the same, then asked if my bracelet worked.
I had bought a copper bracelet a few weeks back from a street vendor from Guadalajara. He wanted 80 pesos but I didn’t really need or want anything, so said 50 or nada…it was just two twisted pieces of #10 Romex solid core copper cable that had been beaten to make a very nice bracelet. But I had periodic pains from all the typing I do so what the heck, buy it.
Told him I didn’t really know if it worked but come to think of it, I hadn’t had any muscle pains lately though had changed from my right hand to my left so when I play with my 13 month old puppy, it won’t hurt him as we do get a bit rough.
As we continued talking, he said he had sore muscles every now and then but had visited Jorgina in a local sports store and she told him to buy some birdseed, the kind you feed to canaries and make a tea to drink or a poultice to rub on the sore muscle. He said he made a poultice, applied it and the muscle pain went away in a short time…
Neither of us ever heard of that so I took note to pass it on here in case anyone has muscle pains they might want to try it on. The man said Jorgina told him it was an old Mexican folk remedy.
I did a search to see if I could find anything about this, particularly a study but only found one item about heating birdseed in sewn pillows to apply to sore muscles;
“Three or four years ago I made all my family bird seed warmers and they are still raving about them. I am not much of a seamstress but it was pretty simple and inexpensive. It is a rectangular shaped sack of bird seed with an outer flannel covering and a rope to tie closed and hang on a door knob. You heat it in the microwave for 3- 5 minutes and wha-la: a warmer for sore muscles that lasts a long time.
-Bird seed – preferably seed with no sunflower seeds.
-Material for the birdseed to be totally sewn into.
- Flannel material for the outside like a pillow case with a rope sewn into the top to tie it closed.
- A cute note tied to it with directions
Basically it’s made like a pillow but stuffed with birdseed and the pillow case is flannel with a rope for hanging it on the door.”
And another site gives a slightly different composition;
Supplies you need
* 1 sock (this is where the odd sock works great.
* 2 cups, wheat, rice, barley or bird seed
* If you don’t want to sew the opening of the sock you will need rubber bands.
Take your sock and fill it with whatever seeds that you like. I prefer barley but I don’t know why. Leave enough room to either sew the top or put a rubber band around the top. You could leave enough room and make a knot in the top. The problem with rubber bands is that when they get a little old they have a tendency to break. If the rubber band breaks then you will have seeds all over the floor. They are a mess to clean up.
Heat in the microwave for 1 ½ minutes on high.
I didn’t know anything about this ‘birdseed for muscle pain’ treatment, so didn’t think to ask him if it was as heating pads or was it something in the seeds when made into a poultice and rubbed on at normal temperatures. Have to try it if I get muscle pains.
But usually I use MSM which works really well. I can’t and won’t recommend anything to anyone, but I’d give it a shot for myself if I had the need. I love folk remedies, especially if they are effective.
