Web-Crawling Program Spots Disease Outbreaks

Posted by keelynet on July 22, 2008

This could prove very useful when in doubt. Wonder if they could apply it to things like this salmonella outbreak?

“”There is a story at Discovery Channel’s site about a new utility for mapping disease. The premise is to have bots crawl the web looking for stories about disease outbreaks and log them onto a map. ‘”We were originally thinking about how we could expand disease surveillance and pick up outbreaks earlier than traditional methods,” said John Brownstein of Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital Boston, who created HealthMap in September of 2006 with Clark Friefeld, a software developer at Harvard Medical School.’ But then it was noticed by Google.org and has since grown into its own website, HealthMap Global disease alert map, and claims to be able to identify 95% of all disease outbreaks, some of them before WHO or CDC.” – Source

95% of reported disease, not 95% of disease outbreaks is the operational wording.

I love it, thanks. I will use this regularly but also see the flaw.

    1. Countries regularly black out reporting some diseases completely for economic reasons.

    2. Vast areas of the world most susceptible to infectious disease outbreaks are remote and under reported even if there is not a state controlled news black out.

    3. Intelligence agencies around the world are well documented to use news media and journalists for planting, altering, and ignoring significant topics.

    4. False stories can now be planted for a range of reasons from currency and futures trading to fear mongering.

    5. Even if all the above factors are not present, the reporting of cases of disease are not related to the number of cases, if reported do not provide a real sampling of diseases in that area, and are motivated by reader interest rather than public health tracking at best.

    6. Journalist are being cut back by newspapers, the principal reporters of all media which is then repeated elsewhere.

The potential for abuse of this tracking out weighs it’s potential for accurate tracking alone.

Still it is fascinating and I will read it, only with a dose of salt.
