Leona Helmsley’s will goes to the dogs

Posted by keelynet on July 3, 2008

This is the most pathetic thing I’ve read in several months. When I think of all the people I know who have projects they want to work on or ARE working on, how they could use even a portion of this money to change the world instead of pampering animals.

I am not a fan of charitable foundations because of the many reports of mis-management resulting in +90% of their funds being used for staff and support, NOT research which was the original intent.

The ones I’ve seen are categorized as non-profit and if they are setup as philanthropic or to issue grants for various purposes, the grants are so small as to be useless in helping to achieve real results OR they require you ALSO be non-profit and/or affiliated with some big lab or university.

They soon realize the need to PERPETUATE the existence of the charity/foundation to insure their jobs and futures, so why on earth do they EVER want to see a CURE or any practical results that would implode and destroy their reason for being?

With the Internet, it’s a simple matter of hunting to find many worthwhile projects if people like this would step out of their insular, pampered worlds to REALLY try to help make changes. Instead, they piss it all away in doting senility for useless and selfish causes like this.

If you have this or any other kind of money and want to REALLY make a difference to a lot of grateful people BEFORE you DIE, give me a shout

and I will direct you to people and groups who will make serious positive changes to help the world, not just some pampered dogs or infinitely sucking charities. Not to forget to mention my lab project that encompasses many novel, fruitful projects.

Make a difference NOW, while you are alive and can enjoy the benefits. Need some M-O-T-I-V-A-T-I-O-N?

Check out the files on this Inspiration Page, especially the one called ‘Die Broke’.

“Her instructions, specified in a two-page “mission statement,” are that the entire trust, valued at $5 billion to $8 billion and amounting to virtually all her estate, be used for the care and welfare of dogs, say two people who have seen the document and who described it on condition of anonymity…

The two people who described the statement said Helmsley signed it in 2003 to establish goals for the multibillion-dollar trust that would disburse assets after her death. The first goal was to help indigent people, the second to provide for the care and welfare of dogs. A year later, they said, she deleted the first goal.

When she died last year at 87, she left all but a few million dollars of her vast estate to what will become one of the dozen largest foundations in the United States when the probate process is finished. She had $2.3 billion in liquid assets when she died, according to the probate petition, and the disposal of her real estate holdings is expected to produce an additional $3 billion to $6 billion.

Even if the resulting total is at the low end of the estimate – $5 billion or so – the trust will be worth almost 10 times the combined assets of all 7,381 animal-related nonprofit groups reporting to the Internal Revenue Service in 2005.

News last year that the biggest named beneficiary in Helmsley’s will was Trouble, led to death threats against the dog, which now requires security costing $100,000 a year. But they also cannot sit on the liquid assets much longer without raising questions in the attorney general’s office, which oversees the use of charitable assets in New York state. – Source
