The Impatience of the Google Generation

Posted by keelynet on January 22, 2008

I see this a lot these days, very short attention spans, always looking for the quick, stripped down version. Rarely do people want to delve into the valley of details when its easier to jump from hilltop to hilltop for the sound bite version.

“A new study overturns the common assumption that the ‘Google Generation’ – youngsters born or brought up in the Internet age – is the most web-literate. The first ever virtual longitudinal study carried out by the CIBER research team at University College London claims that, although young people demonstrate an apparent ease and familiarity with computers, they rely heavily on search engines, view rather than read and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to assess the information that they find on the web. The findings also send a strong message to the government. Educational research into the information behaviour of young people and training programmes on information literacy skills in schools are desperately needed if the UK is to remain as a leading knowledge economy with a strongly-skilled next generation of researchers.” – Source

I think there is a direct correlation to literacy, applied learning and developing social skills with setting and achieving goals in life.

It reflects itself in news media as incorrect spelling or usage of words and phrases and in entertainment media as very crude tv shows such as ‘Charm School’ and other shows which glorify low life gangster or ‘hoochie’ type ‘values’. I find it sickening.

There is a movie out whose name I can’t remember but it shows wealthy kids presenting themselves as gangstas in dress, attitude and vocabulary. But when they encounter the SOURCE of these ‘values’ to be from prostitution, murder, theft, drug use, fighting and random killings, they realize it is NOT something to be admired and for certain not emulated in the least.
